Walmart is making a major shift in its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategy, responding to changing circumstances, including the Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling against affirmative action and increasing pressure from conservative groups. The retail giant announced it would no longer consider race or gender in supplier contracts.
As part of this new direction, Walmart revealed it will close its $100 million racial equity center, end its involvement with the Human Rights Campaign’s inclusion index, and discontinue racial equity training programs. The company also plans to eliminate terms like “Latinx” and “DEI” from its official communications, focusing instead on promoting a general sense of belonging for everyone.
