An extraordinary spectacle unfolded off the California coast as more than 65 humpback whales were filmed engaging in an impressive feeding frenzy. According to a news release from Monterey Bay Whale Watch on October 2, the scene was described by viewers as “off the charts.”
For an astounding four hours, these majestic mammals showcased their lunge-feeding technique over a one-mile stretch of ocean, leaving the experienced crew members of Monterey Bay Whale Watch in awe. They noted that this was the most remarkable lunge-feeding event they had ever witnessed.
The captivating video footage captures the enormous whales propelling themselves out of the water with their mouths wide open, expertly catching fish. During this feeding process, humpbacks gulp down substantial amounts of food, causing their throats to expand with each ton of water and fish, as explained by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
Feeding primarily on small fish and krill, humpback whales are known for their impressive hunting skills, as highlighted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Alongside these giants, hundreds of sea lions were also spotted, adding to the spectacle for lucky onlookers.
Located approximately 120 miles south of San Francisco, Monterey offers a prime location for wildlife enthusiasts to witness such breathtaking natural phenomena.
