In a heartbreaking case from Florida, multiple family members and caregivers have been arrested and indicted in connection with the starvation death of a 7-year-old boy, Deonte Atwell, who tragically passed away from severe malnutrition on Christmas Day last year. This case has revealed disturbing lapses in care and potential fraud within the home healthcare system.
The latest arrest involved Jeremy G., Deonte’s uncle, who faces charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child, child neglect causing great bodily harm, and failing to report child abuse. Jeremy joins a list of others implicated in the boy’s death, including his 37-year-old mother, M. Doe; 21-year-old brother, T. Irvin; 70-year-old grandfather, James G.; 33-year-old nurse, C. Lassegue; and 47-year-old healthcare provider owner, M. Moltimer.
Deonte, who had significant medical conditions such as thoracic spina bifida and hydrocephalus, required constant medical care, including feeding and breathing tubes. Unfortunately, despite these needs, he was found to have suffered severe neglect. When emergency responders arrived on December 25, 2023, following a 911 call reporting Deonte in respiratory distress, they found him unresponsive and pronounced him dead shortly after arrival. Medical professionals noted that Deonte appeared to have been dead for some time before the emergency call was made.
An autopsy revealed that he weighed less than seven pounds, with visible bones due to severe malnutrition. Investigators discovered that 264 unopened bottles of feeding formula were found in the home, indicating the boy had not been fed despite having the necessary supplies. The investigation also uncovered that his death was linked to a broader scheme to defraud Medicaid, estimated at between $10,000 and $50,000. Lassegue is accused of falsifying records, claiming to provide care that was never given, which contributed to Deonte’s tragic neglect.

The arrests have led to various charges against the individuals involved. Deonte’s mother and brother face charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter of a child, and neglect of other children in the home, with potential life sentences or even the death penalty if convicted. His grandfather, James, faces charges of aggravated manslaughter and child neglect but has been granted a $22,000 bond due to his lesser role in the incident. Nurse C. Lassegue and healthcare provider owner M. Moltimer are facing charges of third-degree felony murder, Medicaid fraud, child neglect, and aggravated manslaughter, with up to 30 years in prison possible for the aggravated manslaughter charge alone. Lassegue is also charged with first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse. Jeremy, the uncle, is charged with aggravated manslaughter and other related offenses and is currently being held in jail with a bond set at $121,000.
This case has devastated the family and raised serious concerns about the oversight of home healthcare providers, particularly those entrusted with the care of vulnerable children with complex medical conditions. As investigators continue to gather evidence, advocacy groups are calling for stronger regulations and oversight to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable individuals in similar situations. The death of Deonte Atwell serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of vigilance, compassion, and proper care in protecting those most in need. The legal proceedings are being closely watched by child advocacy groups, who are pushing for stronger protections for children in similar medical circumstances.
