Sauce Recall: FDA Announces Class II Risk for Englewood Cannery Spaghetti Sauce

Tennessee-based Englewood Cannery has recalled cans of its 16-ounce Traditional Country Canning Spaghetti Sauce due to the potential presence of an undeclared allergen. The recall was initiated voluntarily in late October after the company discovered that egg, which is one of the nine major allergens, was not listed on the product label.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the recall as a Class II risk, which refers to situations where exposure to a violative product could cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, though the probability of serious health consequences is low. Affected products were sold only in Alabama and Tennessee, with the following lot codes being part of the recall:

  • 0801231
  • 0810231
  • 0618242
  • 0730241
  • 0730242
  • 0814241
  • 0827241
  • 0827242
  • 0902241

Egg is one of the most common allergens in food, and its presence in these spaghetti sauce cans poses a potential health risk for individuals with egg allergies. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include rashes, swelling, abdominal discomfort, vomiting, and even life-threatening reactions like anaphylaxis, which can cause difficulty breathing, a drop in blood pressure, and loss of consciousness.

The recall highlights the importance of accurate labeling for allergens, as the FDA mandates that food manufacturers clearly list any of the nine major allergens in their products. These include milk, soybeans, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and sesame.

Darin Detwiler, a professor of food policy at Northeastern University, emphasized the importance of seeking immediate medical help if you experience an allergic reaction from consuming a recalled product. He also recommended reporting the incident to the FDA and local health authorities to prevent further incidents.

Consumers who suspect they’ve had an allergic reaction to this spaghetti sauce should retain the product and its packaging for investigation. Undeclared allergens remain one of the leading causes of food recalls in the U.S., with nearly 40% of recalls from 2020 to 2024 being linked to this issue.

This recall follows similar incidents in recent weeks, including a recall by Wegmans for chicken salad containing undeclared egg and Aunt Millie’s Bakehouse products with undeclared sesame.
