RECALL UPDATE : Cheese Recall Expands As Aldi and Several Brands Affected by Listeria Warning

According to Newsweek , Savencia Cheese USA has expanded its recall of soft cheeses following concerns about potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The company added Glenview Farms Spreadable Brie to the recall list, marking the seventh product affected. This recall stems from a routine test that identified possible contamination in processing equipment at Savencia’s Lena, Illinois facility. Although finished product testing has not found any contamination, the company is voluntarily recalling potentially affected products.

The recall impacts a small number of soft-ripened cheeses distributed to select retail partners across 12 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, Oregon, Texas, and Washington. The recalled products have a “best-by” date of December 24, 2024, for other brands, while the newly added Glenview Farms Spreadable Brie is marked with a “best-by” date of January 13, 2025. As of now, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the affected cheeses, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Listeria can cause serious infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. In pregnant women, listeria infections can lead to stillbirths, miscarriages, or newborn infections. For most healthy individuals, listeriosis—an infection caused by listeria—may cause food poisoning-like symptoms, including fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that listeria is the third leading cause of foodborne illness-related deaths in the U.S., with 1,600 infections and 260 deaths annually.

Other products involved in the recall include Aldi Emporium Selection Brie, La Bonne Vie Brie, La Bonne Vie Camembert, Industrial Brie, Market Basket Brie, and Supreme Oval, all with a best-by date of December 24, 2024.

Consumers are advised to check their purchases and discard any recalled items.
