Before you spend that $1 bill in your wallet, take a closer look—it might be worth much more than you think. Some rare $1 bills from 2014 and 2016 can fetch up to $150,000 due to a printing error.
According to Wealthy Nickel, these bills feature a unique mistake from the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, making them highly valuable to collectors. Around 6.4 million of these error notes were printed in two batches: one from a federal bank in New York and another in Washington, D.C. These bills, now scattered around the world, could be sitting right under your nose.
To determine if you have one of these rare bills, look for the following features:
- A “Series 2013” date on the bill.
- A “B” Federal Reserve Seal above the serial number.
- A serial number that ends with a star (★) and falls within specific ranges, such as B00000001, B00250000, B03200001, and B09600000.
What makes these bills especially valuable is the fact that each error note has a twin with the same serial number. So far, only nine matching pairs have been discovered, meaning millions of these bills remain unaccounted for.
If you think you’ve found a rare $1 bill, it’s a good idea to get it appraised at a local coin shop. Depending on its condition and rarity, it could be worth anywhere from $20,000 to $150,000.
