The evening commute in Woodside on Wednesday was significantly impacted, but it had little to do with traffic and everything to do with politics as supporters gathered to rally for the upcoming November general election.
“I’m here to celebrate J.D. Vance. We want him to know he is loved here in California,” said Trump supporter Rosa Ruiz, waving a large American flag. She was among around 100 right-leaning individuals who assembled at the intersection of Woodside and Whiskey Hill roads around 5 p.m. to show their support for vice presidential nominee Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio.
“This gathering demonstrates that we have a voice now,” said Dave Melchner, another enthusiastic Trump supporter. “Many of us have been quiet at home, but it’s important for us to express ourselves just as the left does.”
This marked the Republican ticket’s second visit to the Peninsula in a month, likely due to its affluent donor base. However, organizers noted that pressing social issues also motivated their roadside assembly.
“I have experienced socialism and corruption in my former country, and I understand that America is the best place,” said a co-organizer who chose to remain anonymous.
To amplify the message that “America is Best,” vendors sold a variety of Trump-branded merchandise, including T-shirts, hats, scarves, and novelty items. Vendor Marty Miller noted the high demand, stating, “Nobody’s been doing this around here. That’s the big appeal. Some others are selling items on the street, but not to the extent that I am.”
For Republicans, Trump supporters, and others on the right, Wednesday night provided another opportunity to express their patriotic sentiments in support of their ticket. “When you come out here, you feel patriotism. It doesn’t matter who you are; we welcome everybody,” said Ruiz.
