In a tragic escalation of violence in southeast Mexico, gunmen attacked a bar early Sunday, killing six people and injuring at least five others. The deadly shooting occurred in Villahermosa, the capital of Tabasco, a coastal state grappling with a recent surge in violence.
Omar García Harfuch, Public Safety Secretary, confirmed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), stating that federal and local authorities are collaborating to investigate and solve the crime.
Videos circulating on social media captured the chaos as patrons fled the scene. Some stayed behind, tending to the injured until law enforcement and emergency responders arrived.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and authorities have yet to disclose a motive for the attack.
The Villahermosa shooting is the latest in a string of violent incidents in Mexico. Earlier this month, gunmen targeted a bar in Querétaro, a city historically considered safer than its neighboring states. That attack left ten dead and 13 injured, signaling a disturbing expansion of violence into previously calm regions.
The rising violence poses a significant challenge for Mexico’s new administration, which inherits a complex security crisis amid increasing public concern.
