A Florida man was sentenced to nine months in jail after pleading guilty to vandalizing two graves and urinating on them. Michael Gainer III, 21, was arrested in November following the discovery of damaged tombstones at Jacksonville’s Restlawn Cemeteries and Cremation Gardens, which were the final resting places of cousins Darryl Lundy Jr., 17, and Dari’one Flanigan, 18. The graves were found vandalized after videos of Gainer spitting on and urinating on the tombstones were posted on social media.

Gainer’s actions were captured in videos, one of which showed him damaging a tombstone with a rock and urinating on it. In a live stream, Gainer allegedly admitted to the vandalism, claiming he did it “to get someone to respond.” The videos were forwarded to the mothers of both victims, who identified Gainer from a photo lineup. The damage was discovered by police on August 19, after a woman visited her son’s grave and noted no issues with the tombstone on August 16.
The graves of Lundy and Flanigan, both victims of gun violence, were restored after the incident. Gainer, who initially pleaded not guilty to two felony charges, later changed his plea to guilty. On December 19, he was sentenced to nine months in jail, 42 months of probation, and 300 hours of community service cleaning graveyards.
