Lara Trump Drops Out of Florida Senate Race Amid DeSantis’ Doubts

Lara Trump announced that she is removing her name from consideration for Florida’s soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat, citing growing signs that Governor Ron DeSantis would not back her for the position. This follows doubts raised by her father-in-law, President-elect Donald Trump, who indicated he didn’t expect her to be chosen.

In a social media post on Saturday evening, Lara Trump explained her decision came after considerable thought, reflection, and encouragement from many people. She also teased a “big announcement” in January and expressed interest in continuing to serve the country in the future. In the meantime, she wished Governor DeSantis the best of luck in selecting the appointee.

Florida’s Senate seat will soon be available as Sen. Marco Rubio is stepping down early next year to become Trump’s secretary of state. DeSantis, who is responsible for selecting Rubio’s replacement, is expected to make his decision early in the new year, after conducting thorough interviews and vetting potential candidates.

Multiple individuals have been mentioned as contenders for the role, including Attorney General Ashley Moody, Lt. Gov. Jeanette Núñez, DeSantis’ chief of staff James Uthmeier, and former Florida House Speaker Jose Oliva. In recent weeks, Moody has emerged as a leading candidate. Should DeSantis choose her, he could potentially appoint Uthmeier as the new attorney general.

Earlier this week, President-elect Trump commented that he didn’t expect Lara Trump to be selected for the position, noting, “Ron is doing a good job. It is his choice, nothing to do with me.”

Lara Trump’s potential appointment had gained support from many of Trump’s supporters on social media, as well as some Republican senators, including Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.). She had previously expressed interest in the role in media interviews.

DeSantis, whose initial run for governor was heavily influenced by Trump’s endorsement, had a strained relationship with Trump after launching an unsuccessful bid for the GOP presidential nomination. However, DeSantis endorsed Trump and helped raise funds for his campaign after he dropped out of the race.
