Hayward Police Investigate Domestic Violence as Man Is Accused of Killing Wife

A Hayward man has been arrested for the alleged murder of his wife following an investigation into her suspicious death, authorities announced.

The incident occurred on September 23 in the 27000 block of Eucalyptus Court, located just south of Tennyson High School. Police responded to a 911 call made by a family member who indicated that something was wrong inside the residence.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim, 47-year-old Tania Afanador, unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities also found her husband, 47-year-old Alvaro Sierra, injured with apparent self-inflicted lacerations.

Sierra was transported to a hospital for treatment and was arrested on Saturday while still recovering. After being discharged from the hospital on Sunday, he was booked at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on a murder charge.

Details surrounding Afanador’s death remain undisclosed. Police confirmed that Afanador and Sierra were legally married, lived together, and had no children.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Tania during this incredibly difficult time,” said Police Chief Bryan Matthews in a press statement. “The dedication of our entire department, from detectives to supporting teams, was essential in solving this case. Their diligent efforts in gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and working together led to the swift and safe apprehension of the suspect.
