Governor Newsom Announces $43.7 Million to Strengthen Security for Vulnerable California Communities

Governor Gavin Newsom has announced over $43.7 million in federal funding aimed at enhancing security for 311 nonprofit and faith-based organizations across California, including synagogues, mosques, and institutions that represent communities vulnerable to hate crimes. These grants, part of FEMA’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program, will support improvements such as reinforced doors, high-intensity lighting, and advanced access control systems.

“An attack on any community is an attack on our entire state and our shared values,” Governor Newsom stated, underscoring California’s commitment to safeguarding its diverse residents.

Nancy Ward, Director of the California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), emphasized, “California is committed to ensuring the safety of our communities from the threat of violent hate crimes.”

This funding comes amid rising hate crimes targeting Jewish, Muslim, and LGBTQ+ communities, with anti-Black bias crimes still being the most prevalent in the state.
