Super Bowl-winning coach Tony Dungy celebrated on Tuesday night after a Florida abortion amendment failed to secure enough support to pass. The amendment, which required a 60% supermajority to succeed, received only 43% of “No” votes, with 57% in favor.
Dungy, who opposed the measure, praised the outcome, thanking voters for rejecting Amendment 3, which sought to legalize marijuana, and Amendment 4, which would have expanded abortion access. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his gratitude, stating, “Thank you to all the Florida residents who helped protect the lives of the unborn.”
He added that while the vote was a win for babies, pregnant women with health risks would still be able to access necessary medical treatment, and exceptions for rape and incest remained in place. Dungy emphasized that this was a victory for the unborn.
The abortion debate in Florida has been contentious, particularly after the state’s six-week abortion ban was enacted in May. Supporters of the amendment argued the current law was too restrictive, but the amendment’s failure preserved the state’s existing legislation.
In Florida, abortion-related measures require a supermajority of at least 60% to pass, making it one of the most challenging thresholds in the nation for such initiatives.
