A 31-year-old woman from southwest Miami-Dade was arrested Friday in connection with a fatal crash on Florida’s Turnpike that occurred this summer. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers said Quenitique Smith was driving under the influence at 110 mph when she caused the death of 50-year-old Yuriet Romero in the early morning hours of June 23, just north of Cutler Bay.
According to authorities, the crash happened around 2:15 a.m. about a mile north of Caribbean Boulevard. Smith, driving a Mazda CX-5, collided with a Chevrolet Equinox, injuring the driver and Romero, who was in the front passenger seat. Romero later died from her injuries at Jackson South Medical Center.

When troopers arrived at the scene, Smith was found standing near her SUV, appearing disoriented and unaware of how the crash occurred. She was also visibly intoxicated. Vehicle data indicated that Smith was driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph, and two separate blood-alcohol tests showed readings of approximately 0.11%, well over the legal limit of 0.08%.
Smith was arrested on charges of DUI manslaughter and reckless vehicular homicide. She is being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
