Curly Mustard Greens Recalled Over Listeria Contamination Risk

According to Newsweek , Baker Farms, based in Georgia, is recalling its Curly Mustard Greens after the product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a harmful bacteria that can cause severe illness. The recall involves 16oz plastic bags of Curly Mustard with a best-by date of November 21, 2024. The Texas Department of State Health Services notified Baker Farms on November 29 that the product had tested positive for the bacteria.

Listeria is a serious foodborne pathogen and is the third leading cause of foodborne illness-related deaths in the U.S., causing an estimated 1,600 infections and 260 deaths annually. The bacteria can cause symptoms such as high fever, headache, body stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea in healthy individuals. However, Listeria can be especially dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, potentially leading to miscarriage, stillbirth, or serious infection in newborns.

As of the FDA’s announcement, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled curly mustard greens. Although the greens are now past their expiration date, consumers are advised to discard or return any recalled products they may have.

The affected greens, which were packaged on November 4 and distributed between November 5 and November 9, were sent to nine southeastern U.S. states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas. The affected bags are identified by the product code “8 13098 02018 4” and lot code “bak144-6806.”

Consumers can reach Baker Farms for further information at (844) 761-2244, Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST. The company advises all impacted products to be discarded or returned to the point of purchase.

Other ongoing recalls due to potential contamination include cucumbers and dog food contaminated with Salmonella, as well as other fruit and vegetable products possibly tainted with Listeria.
