According to Newsweek , A dog food recall has been issued across seven states due to potential salmonella contamination. Blue Ridge Beef announced on Monday that its 2-pound packages of Puppy Mix are being recalled after a batch of the product tested positive for the dangerous bacteria. The Puppy Mix, sold as “natural pet food” in frozen logs, was distributed from August 6 to August 23 in Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York.
The recalled products include the UPC number “854298001696” and either of the following lot numbers: “08/06/N25” or “08/16/N25.” The recall was triggered after a litter of puppies in Virginia became ill after consuming the affected product. While there have been no confirmed reports of additional illnesses, the company has warned pet owners to avoid feeding the contaminated food to their pets.
Salmonella can cause severe illness in both pets and humans. Infected pets may show symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, vomiting, or decreased appetite. Healthy pets can also be carriers of the bacteria and transmit it to humans through contact. The FDA advises that anyone who has handled the recalled products or been in contact with surfaces exposed to it thoroughly wash their hands to prevent the spread of infection.
If your pet has consumed the recalled Puppy Mix and shows signs of illness, contact a veterinarian immediately. Consumers are also urged not to feed the recalled product to any animals or donate it. Instead, they should return it to the point of purchase or safely dispose of it to prevent access by children, pets, or wildlife.
Salmonella is a leading cause of foodborne illness in humans and can lead to symptoms such as abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and fever. In severe cases, particularly in vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems, it can lead to more serious complications.
