A Bay Area man and his mother are in custody following the shooting death of a custodian at a Daly City gym last week. According to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, the victim was targeted after he asked the alleged shooter to adhere to the gym’s locker room rules.
On the evening of September 29, Daly City police responded to a report of a shooting in the 1300 block of South Mayfair Avenue. Upon arrival, they found 60-year-old Rolando Viray Yanga dead from multiple gunshot wounds. San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe informed KTVU that Yanga had just left the Fitness 19 gym where he worked and was being followed by 21-year-old Maarij Abdullah Afridi.
Wagstaffe stated that Afridi was known at the gym for his poor hygiene, often seen walking around barefoot and failing to maintain cleanliness, even putting inappropriate items in the toilet. After Yanga addressed Afridi’s behavior, Afridi decided to take violent action against him. “The confrontation here was over cleanliness at the gym,” Wagstaffe explained.
Investigators utilized surveillance footage to track down the vehicle that followed Yanga from the gym. The day after the shooting, they arrested Afridi and his mother, 50-year-old Zaib Un Nisa Afridi. Both are currently held without bail on murder charges and are scheduled to appear in court on October 9. Zaib Afridi is considered an accomplice, having driven the vehicle involved in the crime.
Daly City police urge anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact them at 650-991-8270.
