The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert regarding beef tallow products illegally imported from Mexico. The products, which have been deemed unfit for human consumption, were not properly inspected and lack certification from the Mexican government.
The affected products are packaged in 1-kg or 500-g bags labeled “INCA GRASA COMESTIBLE DE SEBO BOVINO” (edible fat from beef tallow). These items were shipped to distribution and retail locations in Arizona.
The packaging fails to display an establishment number or a USDA mark of inspection, which makes them ineligible for import under U.S. food safety regulations. FSIS identified the problem during routine surveillance at a retail location, where it discovered beef tallow products from an unverified supplier in Mexico.
Although no adverse reactions have been reported, FSIS is advising consumers to either discard the products or return them to the place of purchase. Retailers are urged not to sell the items.
Consumers with concerns about potential illness should seek advice from a healthcare provider. FSIS encourages anyone with food safety questions to contact the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888-674-6854) or email MPHotline@usda.gov.
For complaints about meat, poultry, or egg products, consumers can access the online Electronic Consumer Complaint Monitoring System at foodcomplaint.fsis.usda.
