According to Newsweek , A recent recall of soft cheeses has expanded to include Glenview Farms Spreadable Brie, following concerns about potential listeria contamination. The recall, initiated by Pennsylvania-based Savencia Cheese USA, comes after routine testing revealed that processing equipment at their Lena, Illinois facility may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Although testing of finished products has not identified contaminated cheese, Savencia has decided to voluntarily recall the potentially affected products. The recall affects a small batch of select soft-ripened cheeses distributed across 12 states, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, Oregon, Texas, and Washington.
At this time, there have been no reported illnesses linked to the recalled cheeses, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, listeria is a serious concern, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis, caused by listeria infection, can lead to severe health complications, including miscarriage or stillbirth in pregnant women, as well as meningitis and bloodstream infections in newborns.
Common symptoms of listeriosis include fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies listeria as the third leading cause of foodborne illness-related deaths in the U.S., with 1,600 reported cases and 260 deaths annually.
