Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a young Florida woman in what authorities are calling a “targeted attack.” On Monday morning, 20-year-old Aniya Sheppard was found dead along a road in West Melbourne, near Eber Boulevard and Buddy Drive. A passerby at a nearby gas station noticed what appeared to be a body on the roadside and alerted authorities.
When deputies arrived, Sheppard was pronounced dead at the scene. Brevard County Sheriff’s Office described the shooting as intentional, stating that she was likely the intended victim of this “violent attack.” Nearby residents reported hearing a gunshot early that morning, with one local, Bob Smith, recalling the sound distinctly. “It was just one shot,” Smith said. “This area is typically very quiet, so it’s surprising.”
Sheppard’s family is now grieving the loss. Her mother, Katina, shared on a GoFundMe page that her daughter had been in an abusive relationship. “Aniya had a beautiful soul,” her mother wrote, describing her as humble and generous. “She was troubled and in an abusive relationship. Please help me give her a beautiful homegoing that she truly deserves.”
Police have not announced any suspects or motive but urge anyone with information to contact Agent Kevin Morris of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit at 321-633-8413 or call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477).
