According to Vibes.okdiario , The Social Security Administration (SSA) has confirmed the timeline for the 2025 Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) increase for eligible Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients. However, the COLA boost will not be reflected in payments made in 2024. The 2.5% increase will take effect starting in January 2025, and SSDI beneficiaries will not see this adjustment until their first payments of the new year.
When Will SSDI Recipients Receive the 2025 COLA Increase?
The 2025 COLA increase will not be included in SSDI payments for 2024. Instead, the first payment reflecting the COLA adjustment will be issued on January 3, 2025, for recipients who were approved for benefits before May 1997. If you qualify for both SSDI and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you will see the 2025 COLA increase for SSI payments on December 31, 2024.
For those receiving SSDI but not SSI, the following payment dates apply for the 2025 COLA boost:
- January 8, 2025: SSDI recipients born from the 1st to the 10th of the month.
- January 15, 2025: SSDI recipients born from the 11th to the 20th of the month.
- January 22, 2025: SSDI recipients born from the 21st to the 31st of the month.
How Much Will the 2025 COLA Increase SSDI Benefits?
The COLA increase will raise all SSDI benefits by 2.5%. This means if you currently receive $1,000 in SSDI benefits, your payment will increase by $25, bringing the new total to $1,025.

For those who qualify for the average SSDI payment of $1,542 in 2024, the new monthly payment will be approximately $1,580, adding an extra $38 per month. While this is a meaningful increase, it is slightly lower than the average COLA boost for retirees, which tends to be larger due to differences in income brackets and the taxable maximum.
The largest SSDI payment after the COLA adjustment will rise from $3,822 to $4,018. This increase is based on the taxable maximum, which grows at a rate higher than the standard annual COLA, resulting in a more substantial adjustment for higher-income recipients.
In summary, while the 2025 COLA increase will not affect SSDI payments in 2024, beneficiaries can expect the new payment amounts starting in January 2025. For most recipients, this will mean a modest increase to their monthly checks.
