SSDI Update: Disability Recipients to Get $456 Annual Increase After 2025 COLA
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments are set to see an update, with the Social Security Administration (SSA) recently unveiling the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) figure for disability recipients in 2025. On October 10, the SSA announced a COLA increase of 2.5%.
Understanding the 2.5% COLA Increase
This 2.5% adjustment is slightly lower than the average COLA increase of 2.6% over the past ten years. However, for SSDI recipients, this adjustment will translate to an average increase of approximately $38 for those who qualify for an average monthly payment of $1,539.
Who Will Receive an Extra $456 from SSDI?
Individuals receiving SSDI payments of $1,539 will see an additional $38 each month, which accumulates to a total of $456 over the year. This increase is vital for many recipients as they navigate rising prices and inflation.
It’s important to note that some SSDI recipients may receive more or less than this average amount. For example:
- If your SSDI check is $800, the new payment after the COLA boost will be approximately $820, resulting in an increase of about $20.
- Conversely, those qualifying for a $3,000 monthly payment will receive around $3,075 post-COLA.
When Will SSDI Recipients See the COLA Increase?
The first SSDI payment reflecting the 2.5% COLA boost is scheduled for January 3, 2025. Importantly, there will be no increases in 2024 for SSDI recipients.
It’s worth mentioning that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive the same 2.5% boost on December 31, 2024. This timing is due to January 1, 2025, being a federal holiday. For individuals who receive both SSDI and SSI, the SSI payment will be issued first.
Payment Schedule for SSDI Recipients
Other SSDI payments with the COLA increase will be credited to recipients’ accounts on:
- January 8: for those born between the 1st and the 10th of the month.
- January 15: for those born between the 11th and the 20th.
- January 22: for those born between the 21st and the 31st.
Additionally, SSDI recipients who began receiving benefits before May 1997 or those who also receive SSI payments will see their payments issued on January 1, 2025.
