Restaurant Shake-Up: IHOP Rival Closes Doors After Five Shutdowns This Year

According to The Sun, A beloved burger chain, Frisch’s Big Boy Restaurants, has announced additional closures following several shutdowns earlier this year.

Recent Closure Updates

This week, the IHOP rival revealed that more locations would be closing, despite earlier assurances that no further shutdowns would occur in 2024. Earlier this spring, five Frisch’s locations in Ohio and Kentucky abruptly closed their doors, as reported by The Cincinnati Inquirer. At the time, the company had stated that “no more” locations would be affected.

Official Statement from Frisch’s

Frisch’s Big Boy Restaurants has now indicated that an undisclosed number of locations will shut down by the end of the year. In a statement released on Wednesday, the brand noted: “Due to unforeseen circumstances and various other factors… Frisch’s Big Boy Restaurants will be closing certain locations.” They expressed their commitment to serving loyal customers at other locations and apologized for any inconvenience caused.

Legal Troubles and Financial Strain

The recent announcement comes amid revelations of legal troubles facing Frisch’s, which could be contributing to the sudden closures. The chain reportedly owes approximately $4.5 million in unpaid rent, according to court documents obtained by The Cincinnati Inquirer.

NNN Reit Inc., an Orlando-based real estate and investment trust that acts as the landlord for Frisch’s locations, has initiated legal proceedings. The company owns at least 66 Frisch’s restaurants and is seeking eviction from “more than 20” locations in Southwest Ohio due to unpaid rent since February, which led to eviction demands filed in August.

Impact of Ownership Changes

NNN Reit Inc. acquired Frisch’s Big Boy Restaurants in 2015 for $175 million, and since then, more than 40 locations have closed—approximately a third of the chain’s previous total of 121 restaurants. Currently, there are 78 Frisch’s Big Boy Restaurants remaining in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, according to the company’s website. This number is expected to decline further with the upcoming closures.

Industry-Wide Restaurant Closures

The news of Frisch’s closures comes amid a broader trend of restaurant shutdowns and bankruptcy filings across the industry. For instance, Denny’s plans to shut down at least 150 locations by 2025, although its CFO has promised improvements for the diner chain.

Similarly, Mary’s Pizza Shack Corporation, which operates just 10 locations, filed for bankruptcy last month, and Burger-Fi also faced similar challenges due to debt issues. Additionally, Red Lobster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and closed over 100 locations nationwide, eventually emerging from bankruptcy with the help of RL Investor Holdings.
