November Surprise: Some Social Security Recipients to Receive Extra Check

Some recipients of Social Security disability and retirement benefits will receive an extra payment in November, starting this week. This change affects individuals who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and those who have been collecting Social Security since before May 1997.

Simultaneous Payments This Month

Typically, individuals who receive both SSI and Social Security benefits collect their SSI payments on the first of the month and their Social Security checks on the third. However, this month, those recipients will receive their checks simultaneously on Friday.

Eligibility for SSI Benefits

Both adults and children are eligible for SSI if they have limited to no income or resources and meet specific criteria, such as having a disability or being blind, or if they are 65 years or older. According to the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA), approximately 7.4 million people benefit from SSI.

Upcoming Payment Schedule

In addition to the payment this week, SSI recipients will receive a second check next month, scheduled for November 29. It’s important to note that this is not an additional payment; it will count toward December’s allotment.

Changes to December Payments

SSI payments are usually issued on the first of every month. However, since December 1 falls on a Sunday, and the SSA does not process payments on weekends or federal holidays, the administration will push the payment up a couple of days to avoid delays.

SSA’s Commitment to Recipients

To ensure that recipients do not face financial difficulties, the SSA explained in a blog post, “We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don’t have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment.” The SSA clarified that this adjustment does not mean recipients are receiving duplicate payments for the previous month, so there is no need to contact them regarding the second payment.
