Consumer Advisory
Consumers are urged to check their freezers for any of the affected products. If found, they should dispose of them or return them to the store for a refund. The recalled products were distributed across all U.S. states and Canadian provinces, and are known to have been sold at various retailers, including Albertsons, Aldi, Dollar General, Foodhold, HEB, Kroger, Publix, Target, and Walmart.
Identifying Recalled Products
To help identify the recalled products, the FDA advises consumers to check the UPC on the back of the carton, along with the Lot Code and Best By Date located on the end of the carton. All Lot Codes affected by this recall will begin with 2C.
Health Risks of Listeria
While no illnesses have been linked to these products at this time, the FDA encourages anyone who is concerned to consult a healthcare provider.
A spokesperson for TreeHouse Foods stated, “We are working with our retail customers to retrieve and destroy the recalled products and encourage consumers to check their freezers for any of the products subject to the recall and dispose of them, or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.”
Understanding Listeria
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious infections in individuals consuming contaminated foods, such as soft cheeses, raw milk, deli meats, pâté, cold-smoked fish, sprouts, and melons. It can contaminate food at processing facilities and can survive in refrigerated conditions.
The FDA notes, “Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly individuals, and others with weakened immune systems.” Healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms, including high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Pregnant women are particularly at risk, as Listeria infections can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Listeria infection results in approximately 1,600 infections and 260 deaths annually in the U.S., making it the third leading cause of death from foodborne illnesses in the country.
