Moviegoers to get one-time payment from $9m ‘convenience fee’ settlement but there’s only a single way to claim cash

According to The Sun , Fandango Media LLC, a popular movie ticket company, is set to distribute one-time cash payments to customers as part of a settlement following a class-action lawsuit over undisclosed surcharges.

The lawsuit alleged that Fandango failed to disclose a “convenience fee” on certain online ticket purchases for movie theaters in New York, violating the state’s Arts and Cultural Affairs Law, which regulates ticket sales. Although Fandango denies any wrongdoing, the company has agreed to a $9 million settlement to resolve the claims and avoid further legal costs.

If you believe you are eligible for a payout from this settlement, you must meet the following criteria:

Eligibility Requirements

  1. You must have paid a “convenience fee” when purchasing electronic tickets through Fandango’s website, mobile app, or other platforms it owns.
  2. The tickets must have been for a movie showing at a theater in New York.
  3. The tickets must have been purchased between August 29, 2022, and March 11, 2024.

If you meet these criteria, you can file a claim form to receive compensation.

Filing a Claim

To receive a payout from the settlement, you must submit a claim form. This can be done online through the settlement website or by printing the form and mailing it to the settlement administrator. No proof of purchase is required, but those who are eligible should have received a notice with a Unique ID to enter when filing the claim. If you did not receive a notice or lost the ID, you can contact the settlement administrator to obtain it.

The deadline for submitting your claim form is March 31, 2025, but the deadline to exclude yourself from the settlement or file an objection is earlier, on January 28, 2025.

A final approval hearing is scheduled for February 27, 2025.

Payment Options

Those whose claims are approved can choose between two payout options:

  • A $5 cash payment, or
  • A $10 Fandango at Home voucher for future movie ticket purchases.

Payments will be made via Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, or check in the mail. If the settlement is approved during the February 27 hearing, payments are expected to be distributed shortly thereafter.

Other Settlement Deadlines

In addition to the Fandango settlement, other class action settlements with approaching deadlines include:

  • A privacy settlement offering up to $430, with a deadline of December 12, 2024.
  • A data breach settlement for a furniture company, offering up to $5,000, with a claim deadline of December 16, 2024.

Make sure to check your eligibility for these settlements and submit your claim before the respective deadlines.
