Last Chance: Claim $10,000 from $8M Data Breach Settlement with Just a Receipt!

According to The Sun, An international law firm, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, has agreed to pay $8 million to settle claims related to a significant data breach affecting clients’ information. Individuals impacted by this breach can receive payments of up to $10,000, provided they can submit valid receipts.

Background of the Data Breach Lawsuit

Founded in San Francisco, Orrick faced a class action lawsuit alleging that hackers accessed clients’ sensitive data through unauthorized file transfers. Plaintiffs accused the firm of negligence for failing to implement adequate cybersecurity measures to safeguard their information.

While Orrick did not admit to any wrongdoing, the firm opted to settle the lawsuit by paying $8 million to resolve the claims against it.

Settlement Details and Payment Structure

Under the terms of the settlement, class members can claim various cash benefits, which include:

  • Lost Time Payments: A reimbursement for up to five hours of lost time, compensated at a rate of $25 per hour.
  • Expense Reimbursement: Affected individuals can claim up to $2,500 for ordinary expenses incurred as a result of the data breach.
  • Identity Theft Protection: Those impacted by identity theft or fraud can receive total reimbursements of up to $7,500.

Overall, the highest payment any class member can receive is $10,000. Alternatively, class members who prefer not to claim reimbursements can opt for a flat cash payment of $75 instead.

Additional Benefits for California Residents

Residents in California have access to further compensation, including an additional $150 under the California Consumer Privacy Act. All class members are also eligible for three years of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.

Eligibility and Claims Submission

The class action settlement covers individuals who received a data breach notification from Orrick between March 2023 and December 2023. To qualify for the settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by October 28.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for November 8. Proof of expenses, such as account statements, phone or internet bills, or tax returns, will be required to secure the cash benefits.
