Today marks the final day for shoppers to visit their local Gordon Food Service (GFS) store in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin, as the store permanently closes on October 11. According to an employee, the location at 2609 S Oneida St, Green Bay, will be serving its last customer by 5 PM, earlier than the usual 8 PM closing time.
A notice posted on the store’s door on September 27 had informed customers of the reduced hours, signaling the end was near. With the closure, only one other GFS store remains in northeastern Wisconsin, while Gordon Food Service continues to operate six locations statewide, including a distribution center.
Community Reaction
Local shoppers took to social media to express their disappointment over the closure. Some speculated that competition from nearby Sam’s Club and Costco may have contributed to the decision. One Facebook user remarked, “Probably don’t get enough business with Sam’s and Costco so close.”
What is Gordon Food Service?
Gordon Food Service, a family-owned food distributor based in Wyoming, Michigan, has been in operation for 125 years, serving customers across the Midwest, Northeast, Southeast, and Southwest. With 180 locations, GFS supplies food and services to restaurants, hospitals, schools, and event planners. Customers can shop in-store or order online, and the company is known for selling products in large quantities, often catering to the food industry. Some locations also offer grab-and-go items for convenience.
Retail Closures Continue
Gordon Food Service isn’t the only retailer shutting down locations. Amazon Go recently closed three stores in New York City, citing lease costs as the primary reason, despite the stores performing well. The closures include locations at 11 West 42nd Street, One Liberty, and 30 Rockefeller Center.
In addition, Natural Grocers announced plans to close its Downtown Denver store, with its final day set for October 31. Shoppers at the Denver location can take advantage of a 10% discount on all products during the closing sale. Nearby neighborhoods such as City Park West, Capitol Hill, Baker, and Cherry Creek will continue to have access to other Natural Grocers locations.
These closures reflect a broader trend in the retail industry as businesses evaluate store performance and adapt to shifting consumer behaviors.
