Cause of Recall

The recall was prompted by a routine test conducted at the TreeHouse Foods manufacturing facility, which identified potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This bacterium can lead to a serious infection known as listeriosis, commonly found in contaminated foods, especially raw or unpasteurized dairy products, deli meats, and certain processed foods.

Health Risks of Listeria

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeria infection ranks as the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the United States, with approximately 1,600 infections and 260 deaths reported annually.

Listeria monocytogenes poses particular risks for vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. While healthy individuals may experience mild symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, those in at-risk groups could face severe complications. The FDA has warned that listeria infections can result in miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Conclusion

The recent recall of frozen waffles underscores the ongoing concerns about food safety and the need for consumers to remain vigilant. Those with recalled products should act promptly by disposing of or returning them to ensure their safety and health.
