End of an Era: Popular Old Chicago Pizza Location Shutting Down in December

According to The Sun , Old Chicago Pizza and Taproom, a beloved chain serving pizza, pasta, and beer since 1976, has announced the closure of its Garden City location in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. The restaurant, which has been a staple of the area since 2017, will close its doors for good on December 1. The news was shared via a heartfelt Facebook post, thanking loyal customers for their years of support.

Located just 13 miles south of Myrtle Beach, the Murrells Inlet location of Old Chicago will be replaced by a new establishment, the Bohemian Bull Tavern and Beer Garden, expected to open in early 2025. The owners of Bohemian Bull have expressed their commitment to creating a welcoming, family-friendly environment and are actively hiring former Old Chicago staff.

Despite the closure, the company’s departure from Garden City is bittersweet for many loyal patrons. The Facebook post shared on November 7 reflected on the many memories created at the location, especially during football nights, trivia, and beer tours, and invited customers to visit one last time before it closes. Fans flooded the comments with emotional messages, expressing their love for the food and the staff.

The decision to close the Garden City location comes as part of a broader trend in the restaurant industry. With rising operating costs and shifting consumer behavior, many restaurant chains, including Red Lobster, TGI Friday’s, and Pizza Hut, have closed underperforming locations this year.

As inflation continues to impact the economy, dining out is becoming increasingly expensive, leading to fewer customers at restaurants like Old Chicago. Meanwhile, other chains, like Outback Steakhouse and Papa John’s, are responding with menu simplifications and loyalty programs in hopes of turning their fortunes around.

Fans of Old Chicago Pizza are urged to visit one last time to create lasting memories before the location shuts its doors for good. The restaurant’s legacy in the area will certainly be missed.
