According to The Sun, An international law firm, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, is set to distribute $10,000 payments to individuals affected by an $8 million data breach settlement, provided they can present a valid receipt.
Background of the Settlement
Founded in San Francisco, Orrick is responding to claims that it compromised clients’ personal information. The class action lawsuit alleges that hackers gained access to sensitive data through unauthorized file transfer activities, which the plaintiffs attribute to the firm’s negligence.
Allegations of Negligence
According to the data breach class action lawsuit, Orrick should have taken reasonable cybersecurity measures to safeguard client information. Although the firm has not admitted to any wrongdoing, it has agreed to the settlement amount to resolve the claims.
Settlement Terms and Compensation
Under the terms of the settlement, affected class members can receive various cash benefits, including payments for lost time, expense reimbursement, and compensation under California law.
- Lost Time Compensation: Class members can claim reimbursement for up to five hours of lost time, compensated at a rate of $25 per hour.
- Expense Reimbursement: Eligible individuals can also receive up to $2,500 for ordinary expenses incurred while responding to the data breach.
- Identity Theft or Fraud Compensation: For those who experience identity theft or fraud due to the breach, payments can total up to $7,500.
The maximum payout for any individual is capped at $10,000. However, class members who prefer to forgo the reimbursement payments can opt for a one-time cash payment of $75 instead.
Additional Benefits for California Residents
For class members residing in California, there’s an added incentive. They can claim an additional $150 under California’s Consumer Privacy Act.

Credit Monitoring and Protection Services
Furthermore, affected individuals will also receive three years of complimentary three-bureau credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.
Eligibility and Claim Submission
The class action benefits those who received a data breach notification from Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe between March 2023 and December 2023. To qualify for settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by October 28.
Final Approval Hearing
A final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for November 8. To secure cash payments, class members will need to provide proof of their claims, which can include account statements, phone or internet bills, tax returns, and other relevant documents.
