Thousands of Pounds of Meat Products Recalled Due to Allergy Risks

According to News Week, Several thousand pounds of meat products have been recalled because they may contain undeclared allergens. Tu Gusto, LLC, based in Florida, has recalled approximately 7,630 pounds of frozen meat and poultry croquette products, as announced by the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

Details of the Affected Products

The recalled products were produced between April and October 2024 and were sold in retail stores and restaurants in Florida and Texas. The following items are subject to the recall:

  • 32-oz. box containing “A TU GUSTO PALADAR POLLO (CHICKEN) CROQUETAS (CROQUETTES)”
  • 32-oz. box containing “A TU GUSTO PALADAR CHORIZO (SAUSAGE) CROQUETAS (CROQUETTES)”
  • 32-oz. box containing “A TU GUSTO PALADAR PESCADO (FISH) CROQUETAS (CROQUETTES)”
  • 32-oz. box containing “A TU GUSTO PALADAR JAMON (HAM) CROQUETAS (CROQUETTES)”

Discovery of the Allergen Issue

The issue was identified during FSIS’s surveillance activities at a retail location, where discrepancies in labeling were noted. An investigation revealed that the products originated from a facility that lacked an FSIS inspection grant and contained undeclared allergens on the packaging. Consequently, these items were manufactured without FSIS inspection and are incorrectly labeled.

Misuse of USDA Inspection Mark

The products subject to recall bear a USDA mark of inspection, including the establishment number “EST. 11154,” which was improperly used by the recalling firm. The FSIS clarified that the plant associated with “11154” had no knowledge of its mark being used by Tu Gusto, LLC.

Consumer Safety Advisory

Consumers who have purchased these products are strongly urged not to consume them and to dispose of them immediately.

Understanding Food Allergens

There are nine major allergens that must be declared on all food packaging, as mandated by U.S. food authorities, including the FSIS and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These allergens are:

  • Milk
  • Soybeans
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Crustacean shellfish
  • Tree nuts
  • Peanuts
  • Wheat
  • Sesame

Food allergy reactions can lead to a variety of symptoms, including hives, rashes, swelling, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and respiratory issues like coughing or wheezing. More severe allergic reactions, known as anaphylaxis, can cause throat swelling, difficulty breathing, and loss of consciousness.
