Important Recall: Pies Pulled from Shelves in Washington and Oregon Over Allergy Fears

According to News Week, Grand Central Bakery has voluntarily recalled several frozen pie products and pie dough due to the discovery of an undeclared egg allergen, as reported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Products Affected by the Recall

The recall includes the following items:

  • U-Bake Pie Crust
  • U-Bake Apple Pie

These products were sold between August 1, 2024, and October 20, 2024, and have expiration dates ranging from February 1, 2025, to April 20, 2025. They were packaged in clear plastic with Grand Central Bakery’s branded stickers, which failed to indicate the presence of egg. Consumers can find the expiration date on the exterior of the packaging.

Individuals with an egg allergy are at risk of experiencing serious or potentially life-threatening reactions if they consume these pies. Grand Central Bakery has advised consumers who purchased the affected products to either dispose of them or contact the company for a refund.

Discovery of the Allergen

The presence of undeclared egg was identified by a Grand Central Bakery employee after the affected products had already been distributed. In a statement to Newsweek, Grand Central Bakery CEO Claire Randall reassured consumers that the pie dough products made during the listed sales and expiration dates are safe for those without an egg allergy.

Randall stated, “The presence of egg does not affect the quality or taste. No illnesses have been reported, and we discovered the issue through our own team. We are working closely with the FDA to follow their protocols.”

Regulatory Context

Eggs are classified as one of the nine major allergens recognized by the FDA, alongside wheat, milk, tree nuts, peanuts, soy, shellfish, fish, and sesame. Individuals allergic to eggs may experience reactions such as hives, vomiting, throat swelling, and difficulty breathing, with severe cases potentially leading to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition.

The FDA enforces strict labeling laws that require clear disclosure of allergens on packaging to protect consumers.
