President-elect Donald Trump has announced his nomination of Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Trump made the announcement via a post on Truth Social on Saturday, stating that Chronister, who has served the Tampa, Florida, area for over 32 years, will work alongside his attorney general pick, Pam Bondi, to secure the U.S.-Mexico border.
Trump emphasized that Chronister’s role will focus on addressing the flow of fentanyl and other illegal drugs from across the Southern Border, calling it a critical step in saving lives. The DEA administrator position is Senate-confirmed.
Chronister was appointed to lead the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office by then-Florida Gov. Rick Scott in 2017 and has since been re-elected twice. He holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in criminal justice from St. Leo University and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy’s 260th session.
Chronister is married to Nikki DeBartolo, and the couple has two sons.
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody praised Chronister’s nomination, highlighting his experience in fighting the opioid crisis. She noted his leadership and extensive background, which will be crucial in combating the ongoing flow of Mexican fentanyl into the United States.
