The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is ramping up its presence on interstates and major highways throughout the next week, targeting speeding, seat belt violations, and impaired drivers as part of increased enforcement efforts.
With highway traffic expected to hit record numbers, FHP is stepping up patrols to prevent accidents and fatalities. Last year, more than 11,000 crashes and 582 deaths occurred during the Thanksgiving travel period alone.
“We’re out here to ensure safety. We will be looking for hazardous driving behaviors such as speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving—anything that could lead to a crash,” said FHP Lieutenant Jim Beauford.
As travelers hit the roads, Beauford suggests leaving plenty of time for the journey, staying patient, and most importantly, being sober behind the wheel. “Courteous driving can help you stay within the rules without even thinking about it,” Beauford added. “Remember, the highest speed limit in Florida is 70 mph, and that’s on the interstate.”
In addition to safe driving, Beauford advises drivers to check their vehicles for routine maintenance before setting off to prevent breakdowns, which can lead to added delays.
“Patience and courtesy are key. Use your turn signals, give others space, and keep in mind that everyone’s experience on the road is different. Let’s all do our part to ensure a safe trip,” Beauford said.
