An 84-year-old man from Texas has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly killing his 83-year-old roommate and her dog, authorities report.
On Monday afternoon, the Austin Police Department responded to a call about a deceased person in the University Hills area of Austin. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered the bodies of Linda Mlsna, 83, and her dog. Detective Israel Pina described the incident as a “very, very brutal attack.”
During the investigation, detectives found that Mlsna’s roommate, Jack Moore, was missing. Moore, who had been a longtime acquaintance of Mlsna’s son and moved in after he left, was reportedly causing tension in the household. A neighbor, Lupita Diaz, told CBS Austin that Mlsna had confided in her about feeling uncomfortable living with Moore about a month before the incident.
Moore was apprehended by the APD’s Tactical Intelligence Unit and the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force while being sought on an unrelated carjacking warrant. Investigators later discovered that Moore had been using Mlsna’s credit cards to make purchases after her death. During questioning, Moore confessed to killing Mlsna and her dog, stealing her credit cards, and planning to flee the country.
Moore was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He is being held at the Travis County Jail on $1 million bail. Authorities also revealed that Moore had a criminal history, including time served in prison. However, there had been no prior domestic violence calls to Mlsna’s home.
“This is a tragic reminder that you can never predict who might be dangerous,” Detective Pina said. “It’s disturbing to think that even someone as elderly as Moore could be capable of such violence.”
