SNAP Benefits Update: Age Requirements Increase Due to Debt Ceiling Agreements

According to Vibes.okdiario, Exciting news for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) users: starting this month, beneficiaries will notice a slight increase in their benefits due to the latest cost-of-living adjustments (COLA).

Change in Age Definition for ABAWD

In addition to the benefit increase, there has been a significant change in the age definition for “able-bodied adults without dependents” (ABAWD). The age limit has shifted from 52 to 54 years old. This adjustment marks the final outcome of the Fiscal Responsibility Act, which played a crucial role in suspending the debt ceiling until 2025 and contributed to the removal of former Republican Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy.

SNAP Requirements for Able-Bodied Adults

Under the new regulations, individuals classified as ABAWD must meet specific criteria to maintain their SNAP benefits:

  • Work at least 80 hours per month.
  • Be enrolled in an education or training program.

These requirements will remain in effect until 2030.

Impact on SNAP Benefits

For most households, the increase in SNAP benefits will be modest, amounting to a few extra dollars per month. However, beneficiaries in Alaska, the Virgin Islands, and Guam will see higher adjustments due to elevated food costs in these regions. On the other hand, recipients in Hawaii will experience a reduction after the COLA adjustment, although their payments will still be higher than those in the 48 contiguous states.
