Macy’s to Shutter Kingston Collection Mall Location in 150 Store Closure Initiative

A Macy’s store located within the popular Kingston Collection mall is set to close its doors in the coming months as part of the department store chain’s plan to shut down 150 underperforming locations by 2026.

Details of the Closure

Macy’s executives have reassured shoppers that the closure of the Massachusetts outlet is not imminent. The store will remain open through early 2025, allowing customers to purchase Thanksgiving items and Christmas gifts before it shuts down. This location has been a staple in the mall since 1989, originally as a Filene’s outlet.

Community Reactions

Local shoppers have expressed their disappointment over the impending closure. “It’s sad. I grew up here, and I’ve shopped here,” one shopper told WBZ. Another commented, “I’m very disappointed. I love it,” while a third lamented, “Such a bummer about the mall. The place was off the hook.”

Other Retailers in the Mall

The Kingston Collection mall is home to several other retailers, including Starbucks, Sunglass Hut, Target, and Toys R Us. It remains unclear what will occupy the space after Macy’s departs.

Macy’s Plans Beyond Massachusetts

While Macy’s is closing this particular store, it is not exiting Massachusetts entirely, as the chain operates over a dozen other locations in the state. However, closures are also expected for stores in Braintree and Hanover.

National Store Closures

This Massachusetts location is not the only Macy’s store facing closure. In August, it was reported that a store in Tucker, Georgia, approximately 24 minutes northeast of Atlanta, is also set to close by early next year. The decision to shut down 150 stores was first announced in February, following significant losses reported in the fourth quarter.

Future Plans for Macy’s

Despite the store closures, Macy’s executives have indicated that the chain is not disappearing. Plans have been unveiled to refurbish 350 outlets and open 15 Bloomingdale locations. “We are making the necessary moves to reinvigorate relationships with our customers through improved shopping experiences, relevant assortments, and compelling value,” stated Tony Spring, Macy’s CEO.

Industry Context

Macy’s is not alone in facing store closures; other major department store chains like JCPenney and Belk have also shuttered outlets in recent years. The retail landscape continues to shift as companies adapt to changing consumer preferences and economic pressures.
