Retail giant Big Lots has announced that all 1,075 of its locations will be closed on Christmas Day, joining a growing list of major retailers observing a holiday closure. Popular chains such as Target, Walmart, Costco, Dollar Tree, and Dollar General are also shutting their doors, leaving holiday shoppers with fewer options on December 25.
Plan Ahead for Holiday Shopping
With so many retailers closed, shoppers need to complete their gift buying and holiday preparations before Christmas Day. The weeks leading up to December 25 are among the busiest of the year, as families finalize their festive décor, home goods, and presents.
Big Lots will remain open on Christmas Eve from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, giving shoppers nine hours to make last-minute purchases before the blackout. The retailer resumes operations on December 26 and is expected to maintain regular hours on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
A Break for Retail Workers
Christmas Day is the only day Big Lots closes annually, allowing employees to enjoy the holiday with their loved ones. Other major retailers, including Macy’s, The Home Depot, and Kohl’s, will also close for the holiday, extending the same opportunity to their staff.
Grocery Store Closures and Limited Options
Many grocery stores, such as Trader Joe’s, Aldi, Publix, and Wegman’s, will be closed on Christmas Day. However, if you need last-minute ingredients for your holiday meal, some stores will remain open, including Bravo Supermarkets, Safeway, 7-Eleven, and Walgreens. Be sure to check your local store’s hours to avoid any inconvenience.

Dining Out on Christmas Day
If you’d prefer to dine out or grab a quick coffee, several restaurants and fast-food chains will remain open on Christmas. These include Benihana, Denny’s, Hooters, Dunkin’, Starbucks, and McDonald’s. As with retail stores, confirm operating hours with your local restaurant before heading out.
Big Lots and Bankruptcy News
Christmas Day isn’t the only challenge facing Big Lots. The company filed for bankruptcy in September and has since announced significant store closures. In total, 545 locations are expected to shut down permanently, including 56 closures in October and an additional 19 last month.
Final Holiday Shopping Tips
To avoid stress, aim to complete your shopping by Christmas Eve. If you still need gifts or decorations, consider online deals or look for in-store bargains on December 24. For those who are still decorating, Walmart offers winter wonderland Christmas trees that could add a festive touch to your home.
By planning ahead, you can enjoy a stress-free Christmas and make the most of the holiday season.
