Ohio’s Lieutenant Nick Jones, a member of the Westerville Fire Department, has returned home after a 21-day mission providing hurricane relief as part of Ohio Task Force 1’s Urban Search and Rescue Team. The 82-member team was deployed to assist with the aftermath of severe storms in Florida and North Carolina.
The team’s journey began in Orlando, where they stationed themselves in preparation for Hurricane Helene’s expected arrival. After the hurricane passed, Jones and his team traveled to Asheville, North Carolina, to assist with the aftermath of flooding and mudslides caused by the storm. Jones worked alongside canine specialists, conducting search efforts in Cherokee and Boone counties, areas severely affected by the hurricane’s destruction.
As another hurricane, Milton, swept through, Jones’ team returned to Orlando to respond to the devastation left by two tornadoes spawned by the storm. They focused on a mobile home park that had been severely damaged, conducting swift and thorough rescue operations.
Jones, reflecting on his role, shared, “My role as a Rescue Specialist is boots on the ground,” in an interview with the City of Westerville. “I conduct operations on searches, going door-to-door as well as targeting specific areas. If we find someone in distress or in need of care, we’re equipped to treat them in nearly any situation.” His words highlight the essential work carried out by the team during these critical times.
Jones and his team’s dedication to their mission showcases the remarkable commitment of first responders who step up in times of crisis. Their efforts span state lines, bringing much-needed aid to communities in the wake of nature’s destruction. As Florida and North Carolina rebuild, the selflessness and bravery of individuals like Lieutenant Nick Jones play a pivotal role in their recovery.
