FDA Classifies U-Bake Pie Recall as High-Risk Due to Undeclared Egg Allergen

According to Newsweek , A recall for four types of U-Bake pies sold by Grand Central Bakery has been classified as Class I, the highest risk category, due to the presence of an undeclared egg allergen. The recall, issued on October 25, was prompted by the discovery that egg was added to the pie dough, which was not indicated on the packaging. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the recall as Class I, meaning there is a reasonable probability that consuming the affected pies could cause serious adverse health consequences or even death.

The pies were sold between August 1 and October 20, 2024, and have expiration dates from February 1 to April 20, 2025. The recall affects 150 packages of Apple Pie, 366 packages of Marionberry Pie, 2,637 packages of Chicken Pot Pie, and 1,450 packages of pie crust with expiration dates between February 1 and April 17, 2025. The Bulk Pie Dough, labeled with manufacturing dates between August 1 and October 17, 2024, is also affected.

The pies were sold in clear plastic packaging with Grand Central Bakery’s branded labels, which did not disclose the presence of egg, a common allergen. While the bakery has not reported any illnesses, it urges customers with egg allergies to avoid consuming the pies. For individuals without an egg allergy, the pies remain safe to eat, as the egg does not impact the quality or taste of the product. The company confirmed that the issue was identified through its own internal review.

Eggs are one of the top nine allergens recognized by the FDA, and all products containing eggs must have the allergen clearly labeled. Reactions to egg allergens can include hives, vomiting, throat swelling, difficulty breathing, and in severe cases, anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening. Customers who purchased the affected pies should discard them or return them for a refund.

Grand Central Bakery is cooperating with the FDA to ensure full compliance with recall procedures and to prevent future issues.
