Hummus Recall: Foreign Objects Found in Member’s Mark Roasted Red Pepper

According to Newsweek , Cedar’s Mediterranean Foods Inc. has voluntarily recalled a batch of Member’s Mark Roasted Red Pepper Hummus due to concerns about foreign objects found in the product. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the recall as Class II, meaning there is a low likelihood of serious health consequences but that temporary or medically reversible effects could occur.

The recall, initiated on October 9, affects 32-ounce containers of the hummus, with the product code 193968044268. The impacted units have best-if-used-by dates of November 21, 2024 (lot code 20I24) and November 23, 2024 (lot code 40I24). A total of 23,136 units were distributed across ten states: North Carolina, Texas, Ohio, New York, Georgia, Minnesota, Indiana, Virginia, Maryland, and Louisiana.

Foreign objects such as glass, plastic, metal, or bone found in food products are a known safety risk, with potential injuries ranging from lacerations to damage to the mouth, tongue, throat, and gastrointestinal tract. While the FDA notes that foreign objects smaller than 7mm rarely cause serious injury, they could pose a risk to vulnerable populations, including infants, the elderly, and individuals recovering from surgery.

This recall follows several similar incidents in recent months, including the recall of cinnamon rolls and cheese Danishes in November due to plastic contamination, as well as the recall of frozen chicken and potato salad in August due to metal and plastic fragments.

Consumers who purchased the affected hummus are advised to discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Cedar’s Mediterranean Foods has been contacted for comment regarding the recall.
