Porch pirates are firmly on Governor Ron DeSantis’ “naughty list” this Christmas season. In April, DeSantis signed House Bill 549, introducing harsher penalties for package theft, especially during the busy holiday shopping period.
The law, aimed at curbing porch piracy and retail theft, escalates the severity of penalties for stolen packages worth more than $40.
“If it’s over the value of $40, then it’s a third-degree felony,” explained Bay County Sheriff’s Office Captain Jason Daffin. “This means going from a misdemeanor with up to one year in jail to a potential five-year sentence for a felony.”
Seasonal Spike in Porch Thefts
Bay County officials report that while porch thefts happen year-round, the holiday season sees a sharp increase.
“Sometimes it’s a crime of opportunity — people see packages sitting there and give in to temptation. Other times, individuals actively patrol neighborhoods during the holiday season, targeting packages left on doorsteps,” said Daffin.
How to Protect Your Packages
Law enforcement recommends several strategies to deter porch pirates:
- Install Video Surveillance: Cameras can provide valuable evidence and help officers quickly identify suspects.
- Plan Deliveries: Arrange to be home when packages are delivered, or request pickup from a secure location.
- Report Suspicious Activity: Notify authorities immediately if you see suspicious behavior in your neighborhood.
“If you’re a victim of porch theft, contact law enforcement,” Daffin advised. “We’ll work diligently to identify the suspect, hold them accountable, and pursue the most severe charges to ensure justice.”
Added Security: Holiday Home Checks
The Bay County Sheriff’s Office offers Holiday Home Checks for residents going out of town during the season. Deputies will monitor your property, adding another layer of security to protect your home and belongings.
“During this season, we should be focused on serving each other, not preying on others,” said Daffin. “We’re here to ensure everyone can enjoy a safe and joyous holiday season.”
