Bay Area Sizzles: Multiple Heat Records Shattered on Sunday
Heat records were matched or broken across the Bay Area on Sunday, with temperatures surpassing those seen during a historic heatwave nearly 100 years ago, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
San Rafael recorded the highest temperature in the Bay Area at 107 degrees, exceeding the previous record of 95 degrees set in 2023. In Marin County, Kentfield reached 102 degrees, breaking its former high of 97 degrees from 1930.
Santa Rosa in Sonoma County also matched a historical temperature of 102 degrees, a record dating back to 1930. In Napa County, temperatures at Napa State Hospital soared to over 102 degrees, surpassing the 96 degrees recorded during the 1930 heatwave.
Downtown San Francisco set a new record by reaching 97 degrees, beating the previous high of 94 degrees from 1992. The San Francisco airport recorded a temperature of 98 degrees, exceeding last year’s high of 92 degrees.
In the South Bay, Redwood City hit 102 degrees, surpassing its previous record of 99 degrees from 1987. San Jose reached 103 degrees, higher than the 95 degrees recorded in 2023. The Salinas airport matched last year’s high, recording 98 degrees.
The NWS emphasizes that these figures are preliminary, with official temperatures to be confirmed by the National Centers for Environmental Information.
