Costco is significantly reducing its book offerings, announcing that most of its 600+ U.S. locations will stop selling books year-round starting in January. Going forward, books will only be available during the holiday season, from September to December. This change was communicated to publishers last summer, according to The New York Times.
The shift is already taking place in regions such as Alaska and Hawaii, where book sections have been completely phased out. Around 100 Costco locations will continue to sell books throughout the year, while others may offer promotional book pallets, as reported by Publishers Weekly.
Costco explained that the decision stems from the labor-intensive effort required to manage book sections year-round. This move marks a significant change for the retailer, affecting both publishers and customers who enjoy browsing books at Costco.
