A devastating tragedy has rocked a community in California, as a 19-year-old man, identified as M. Sandoval, has been accused of a horrific crime that claimed the lives of his ex-girlfriend and three of her roommates. Sandoval faces four counts of murder, along with charges of first-degree residential burglary with a person present and arson of an inhabited structure or property.
The gruesome events took place in the early hours of November 16, when Sandoval allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home. According to the District Attorney’s Office, the attack appeared to be premeditated, with Sandoval lying in wait and using a handgun to murder the victims while they slept. The victims—E. Garcia, 24, M. Montebello, 23, J. Maquindang, 24, and C. Aca-ac, 29—were all asleep at the time of the attack. Among the victims, Maquindang and Aca-ac were siblings, amplifying the horror of the situation as an entire family was almost wiped out in a single act of violence. After shooting the victims, Sandoval allegedly set fire to the house in an attempt to destroy evidence of his crimes.
While three of the victims were declared dead at the scene, Montebello was rescued from the flames by first responders, but tragically succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. In a stroke of luck, a fifth occupant, a 16-year-old girl, was able to escape the attack. Hearing the gunshots, she hid in a closet and managed to call 911, leading to a swift response from law enforcement and firefighters. By 2:30 a.m., the fire was under control, and the full extent of the tragedy was revealed.
Sandoval appeared in court for his initial hearing, arriving shirtless. He was previously in a relationship with one of the victims, which may have been a possible motive for the attack, though details about their relationship remain undisclosed.
District Attorney G. Gascón expressed deep sorrow, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of these four lives, including a brother and sister, who were callously shot as they peacefully slept in their beds.” He acknowledged the profound impact the crime has had on the Lancaster community and the devastating grief felt by the victims’ families. Sandoval is being held without bond at the county jail, with his arraignment scheduled for January 27, 2024. If convicted, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
In response to the tragedy, the community has come together to support the victims’ families. GoFundMe campaigns have been launched for each of the victims, including Maquindang and Aca-ac, Garcia, and Montebello, to assist with funeral costs and to provide support to the grieving families. This heartbreaking incident underscores the need to address domestic violence and mental health issues, while also raising concerns about the accessibility of firearms. As the community and authorities grapple with the aftermath, the tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of interpersonal violence.
