California Governor Gavin Newsom issued 19 pardons on Thanksgiving Eve, including one for Earlonne Woods, co-creator of the award-winning podcast Ear Hustle. Newsom praised Woods for his transformation and granted him a “full and unconditional” pardon.
Woods co-launched Ear Hustle in 2017 while incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison, where the podcast brought listeners into the lives of those behind bars. The show, which has amassed over 80 million downloads, became the first audio production to be named a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2020.
Released from San Quentin in 2018 after former Governor Jerry Brown commuted his sentence, Woods has continued to co-host the podcast from outside the prison walls. He is also collaborating with actor Morgan Freeman’s production company on a new docuseries, as reported by Deadline.
Woods’ criminal history includes a 10-year sentence for burglary and kidnapping at age 17 and a second potential life sentence for a 1999 armed robbery attempt. Newsom began the pardon process in May, requiring approval from the California Supreme Court due to Woods’ multiple felony convictions.
With this pardon, Newsom recognizes Woods’ rehabilitation and contributions to society. Over his tenure, Newsom has granted more than 200 pardons.
