John Tinniswood, who briefly held the title of the world’s oldest man, passed away on Monday at the age of 112, his family confirmed to the media in the United Kingdom. He had been living in a care home in Southport, England, in his final years. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
Tinniswood’s family shared a statement saying, “His last day was surrounded by music and love,” expressing gratitude for the care he received during his 13 years at the care home. Born on August 26, 1912, in Liverpool, Tinniswood was known for his humility regarding his long life, stating that it was simply “pure luck.” He famously said, “You either live long or you live short, and you can’t do much about it.”
At the time of his death, Tinniswood was also recognized as the world’s oldest surviving male World War II veteran. He assumed the title of the oldest living man on April 3, 2024, following the death of Juan Vicente Pérez from Venezuela, who passed away just a day earlier at the age of 114.
While many centenarians attribute their longevity to specific diets or habits, Tinniswood maintained that he had no such secrets. He said, “I eat what they give me and so does everybody else,” with the exception of a cherished weekly meal of fish and chips every Friday. Tinniswood was known for his moderation in all aspects of life: he didn’t smoke, rarely drank, and lived by the philosophy that “if you do too much of anything, you’re going to suffer eventually.”
In interviews, Tinniswood also emphasized that he didn’t think of himself as anything special. “I can’t think of any special secrets I have,” he remarked on his 112th birthday in August. “I was quite active as a youngster; I did a lot of walking. But to me, I’m no different to anyone. No different at all.”
Tinniswood was predeceased by his wife, Blodwen, who passed away in 1986. He is survived by his daughter, Susan, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Guinness World Records has not yet named the new holder of the title for the world’s oldest living man.
