Former U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) has recently made headlines after withdrawing his name from consideration for Donald Trump’s Attorney General role amidst ongoing allegations of child sex trafficking. However, there are other aspects of Gaetz’s past that are coming to light, according to a new report by Jeffrey Schweers, an award-winning journalist with the Orlando Sentinel.
In an article titled “Gaetz’ Bad Boy Image Finally Catches Up With Him,” Schweers delves into Gaetz’s controversial history, highlighting the former congressman’s reputation as a “party animal” and his knack for stirring up public controversy. Gaetz, known for his staunch defense of Trump and his bold, often provocative political antics, stepped down from consideration for Attorney General after it became clear that he lacked the support in the U.S. Senate. His nomination faced swift criticism from senators across party lines, with some calling him “a not serious candidate” and others demanding more information regarding the sexual misconduct allegations that have followed him for years.
The report also revisits Gaetz’s earlier career as an attorney. According to Schweers, Gaetz handled modest legal cases early on, with records showing his involvement in traffic infractions, contract disputes, and negligence claims. One of his cases even involved a dispute over the location of a beach volleyball net. But Gaetz’s legal career took a controversial turn when, after less than a year practicing law, he was arrested for drunk driving in 2008. Although the charges were dropped, the incident marked the beginning of a series of missteps. Schweers notes that Gaetz’s casual approach to his legal practice continued over the years. In 2021, Gaetz had his law license suspended for failing to pay fees, and in 2023, he was cited for not meeting continuing legal education requirements.
Gaetz’s political career also raised eyebrows. After being elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2010 as part of the Tea Party wave, Gaetz became known for his vocal opposition to the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, and Florida’s controversial ‘stand-your-ground’ law. He was instrumental in passing Florida’s medical marijuana law but also made a name for himself by lashing out at political enemies. His time in Washington was no less contentious, and he continued to attract criticism for his outspoken positions on various issues. In 2017, as a freshman congressman, Gaetz made headlines for casting the lone vote against a widely supported anti-human trafficking bill, further fueling his controversial image.
As speculation swirls about his future political ambitions, Gaetz hinted over the weekend that he may be considering a run for governor of Florida. Whether or not he takes this step, his complex and controversial history continues to shape public perceptions of the once-prominent politician.
