Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a significant investment of over $91 million in state funding to support California’s Native American communities in their efforts to combat homelessness and expand affordable housing. Of the total amount, $71 million will be allocated through the newly established Tribal Homekey program, while $20 million will be distributed via the Tribal Homeless Housing, Assistance, and Prevention (Tribal HHAP) program. Both programs are managed by the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD).
The Tribal Homekey program, inspired by California’s successful Homekey initiative, will provide funding for 172 affordable rental units in nine rural counties. The initiative is designed to support long-term housing solutions for Native American communities in need. Meanwhile, the Tribal HHAP program will assist 37 tribes by implementing culturally relevant strategies to address homelessness in their communities.
HCD Director Gustavo Velasquez highlighted the state’s ongoing commitment to removing barriers and ensuring that tribes have access to critical housing resources. These investments reflect California’s dedication to supporting Native American communities in building sustainable housing solutions and addressing the housing crisis across the state.
